As Bahrain tussled the gruelling heat, thousands of construction workers endured the weather as they got their work done. Bringing a form of comfort and relief, the Indian Community Relief Fund (ICRF), had launched an initiative where they provide refreshments for these workers. The 10-week series saw more than 2,150 workers being provided with water and fruits by ICRF Thirst Quenchers.

They conducted their 10th and final series yesterday as they distributed bottled water and fruits to more than 850 workers at a construction site behind the Financial Harbour, Manama. Over ten weeks, the ICRF thirst-quenchers went to various camps and construction sites distributing water and fruits in Juffair, Hidd, Salmabad, Manama, Saar, Tubli, Budaiya and Seef.

Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs Head of Guidance and Awareness Hussain Al Hussaini attended the event. He stated that the Ministry of Labour appreciated ICRF’s welfare activities including distribution of water and fruits during the summer months.

Embassy of India Second Secretary P K Chowdhury was also present at yesterday’s event. He praised the ICRF volunteers applauding their efforts in creating awareness among labourers on the importance of staying healthy.

The ICRF Thirst-Quenchers program was started five years ago. This initiative that ICRF-Thirst Quenchers organises is part of its efforts to support the Ministry of Labour and Social Development’s campaign to keep workers hydrated and safe during the peak summer months.

During an earlier press conference ICRF chairman, Aruldas Thomas highlighted the significance of the initiative.

“This one bottle of water may not make a difference in their life but what we are trying to communicate to them is the importance of staying hydrated. When we provide them with water, here is our chance to them and tell them to have ample intake of water so that they won’t be dehydrated. It is through these activities and sessions that we are able to communicate and reach out to them” he stated.

ICRF members Aruldas Thomas (Chairman), Dr Babu Ramachandran (Vice-Chairman), John Philip, (General Secretary), Pankaj Nallur (Joint Secretary), Sudheer Thirunilath (Thirst-Quenchers Coordinator), Rakesh Sharma, Muralikrishnan, Clifford Correia, M K Sirajudeen, Sivakumar, Sunilkumar, Aneesh Sreedharan, Pavithran Neeleswaram and Sanchitha Hazare participated in the distribution.

Aruldas Thomas thanked and appreciated the ministry official and embassy official for their presence during the weekend. Apart from these activities, ICRF also conducts their regular activities such as medical aid, legal aid, immigration support, financial and legal support.
