Local markets witnessed an increase in the prices of onions by more than 100% during the past ten days, where the price of a kilo rose from 120 fils per kilo to 250 fils, and from 2,200 dinars for a bag size of 20 kilos to 4 and a half dinars for Indian and Pakistani onions, and from dinars and 600 fils for 20 kilos For Egyptian onions to 3 and a half dinars.
Traders linked the reasons for this increase to the lack of supply and increased demand due to floods and rains in both India and Pakistan and because of the recent wave of high prices in Egypt. This threatens to cause a global crisis in the availability of onions in the coming days if the crisis of onions continues in the coming period.
Traders also pointed out that they resort to import from China and Egypt, which in turn raised their prices because of the scarcity of Indian onions and increased demand.
It is worth mentioning that the local and international markets witnessed a similar crisis in November 2017 and the price of Indian onions has more than doubled at the time.
