A compulsory health insurance law for expatriates is expected to be issued and applied by the beginning of 2020,” Vice-Chairman of Solidarity Bahrain Insurance Company, Ashraf Adnan Bseisu, told reporters on the sidelines of the company’s opening of its digital branch at Seef Mall.

He predicted that this decision after the issuance of the law and the clear perception of the government to implement it.

Bseisu said that according to the law, employers will be obliged to include expatriate workers and their families in health insurance. This, he noted, will result in a big leap in insurance premiums.

On the implications of this decision on the performance of insurance companies, Bseisu commented that the health insurance project will open a way for insurance companies to expand their services and will greatly help them introduce new insurance services. Moreover, he added, it will create a boom in health insurance premiums.

According to official data, the total health insurance premiums in Bahrain amounted to BD 60.2 million as of the end of 2016, with an annual growth of 19%.
