Tamilians in Bahrain are getting ready to celebrate Thai Pongal tomorrow. Organised by Bahrain Tamils, “Farmer’s Festival 2019” will be conducted with diverse events. The main celebration that happens on the second day of the four-day festival which is according to the Tamil calendar is called as Thai Pongal. 

The event is organized under the patronage of the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry’s agriculture and marine resources affairs directorate. The chief guest for the grand celebration will be wealth director Hussain Al Laith.

On the day, a sweet preparation known as Pongal made of rice and milk is made and served to families. Pongal literally means overflowing in Tamil, a representation of the harvest and of prosperity and abundance. Women gather at open spaces and prepare the dish in earthen pots as an offering to the Sun God. They also offer sugarcane sticks, coconuts and bananas to God. Women draw kolam with lime powder outside their houses, a ritual done early in the morning.

The Bahrain Tamil community are set to celebrate with traditional fervour. The Farmer’s Festival 2019 which will be staged tomorrow at the Indian Club, Bahrain from 7 AM onwards.
